Journal

My name is Lauren Burd. I am an industrial and systems engineering student. I currently am intrested in pursuing a career in either engineering or patent law.

My first year at college has been a time of discovery and growth. As I am exposed to many educational opportunities, I have had the ability to pave my way as a student. I am excited to have the opportunity to be involved in so many organizations as I further my education.

Reflection on my freshman spring:

Looking back on my freshman spring semester, I am really grateful for the many opportunities that I have been given through attending UF. Socially, I have made many new friendships and connections. Academically, I have been able to explore my many interests. For example, I joined TAMID's fund track this semester as I have become interested in pursuing finance through the healthcare sector. I overcame difficulties that came with taking a much harder coursework semester while continuing to dedicate much of my time to my research. Ultimately, this semester has taught me many valuable lessons regarding determination and discipline.

I am currently involved in a sleep lab. My specific research focus is on the spread of tau proteins. This research is helping me examine molecular mechanisms that facilitate the spread of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases.
